Disputing the Comma Johanneum

One of the verses used by Trinitarians to support their view of “3 persons” in the Godhead is 1John 5:7-

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

While we believe that the Word of God is inerrant, we must understand that it is the ORIGINAL manuscript which should be considered when it comes to authenticity. There is proof that the Catholic Church tampered with the original manuscripts to suit its idea of Godhead. As a matter of fact, the original Greek manuscript in 1John 5:7 does not include the Comma Johanneum, which is the text “in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one”. This section was later written by hand to creep in the concept of Trinity. The modern Greek Bible shows this section within brackets to signify it was NOT a part of the original scripture.

There has always been an attempt by the Devil to twist and distort the truth. Even in the Bible, the Chief Priests and the elders bribed the Romans to lie that Jesus’ disciples stole His body. The Devil keeps orchestrating such lies and deception even today, to rob Jesus’ of His glory. The Comma Johanneum is another such intrusion by Satan to deny the sovereignty of the LORD Jesus Christ.

Fulness of the Godhead

Notwithstanding, there are a myriad of other proofs in the Bible which strongly claim that Jesus Christ is the “fullness of the Godhead”, meaning that He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Col 2:9 “For in him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

The term “Godhead” does not mean a “Board Team” where the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit are members. Rather, it means ALL the attributes and characteristics that make God.

For example, God is Holy, God is Loving, God is Omnipotent, God is OmnipresentEven if we remove one of His attributes, He ceases to be God. We cannot argue that He is still God because the other 99% of the attributes remain.

Now, when Paul declares that the Godhead dwells in Jesus, it means the 100% of Godhead- not one third! To emphasize this truth, he uses the term “Fulness” of the Godhead. Still not convinced, he further says “ALL the FULNESS of the GODHEAD” dwells in Jesus. This simple, yet amazing statement itself establishes the true identity of the LORD Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the Father

The Bible clearly declares that Jesus is the Father. He is the LORD Jehovah of the Old Testament manifest in the flesh- the human body God made for Himself.

Isa 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

In John 14:9, when Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus replied that He IS the Father. “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?”

The below table provides even more proof that Jesus is the Father:

Jesus is the Holy Spirit

The Bible also reveals that Jesus is the Holy Spirit.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

The trinitarians misinterpret this verse and believe that the Holy Spirit is "another person" altogether from Lord Jesus. However, that's not the case. Jesus Himself lives inside His believers as the Holy Spirit. Consider the below scriptures:

John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Matt 28:20 I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Gal 4:6 God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Soninto your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Not only that, the Bible even says that the Spirit of Jesus dwelt inside the Old Testament prophets!

1 Peter 1: 10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

Epilogue

So, who exactly is Jesus Christ?

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Jesus existed from the beginning, before the foundation of the world. He was, and is God- not “one of the Gods”.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

God became flesh to dwell among mankind as Jesus Christ. His glory was as the glory of the Father (before he became flesh).

1 Tim 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

This very clearly states that God was manifest in the flesh. The Bible also says that God shed his own blood to redeem the church:

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

When the LORD Jesus was on earth, He spoke in proverbs and parables so that only the true lovers of God could understand the truth. He was fully God and fully man. Before the crucifixion, even the disciples were not fully aware that Jesus was Jehovah Himself. But, after the resurrection, their eyes were opened; Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!”.

John 16:25 “These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.”

The Bible is interwoven with mysteries that can only be understood with God’s guidance and help. There is only one truth. Any man-made doctrines and extra biblical heresies should not be adhered to. May the LORD grant us the discernment and understanding that we need to follow in His truth.

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ.

This is the true God, and eternal life.
